Training Tips

When it comes to horse training, success starts with respect. This is the philosophy behind the Respect Series, and in this post, we’ll dive into why this approach is essential for every horse and rider. Whether you’re a seasoned trainer or new to the equestrian world, the Respect Series provides the groundwork for building a safe, confident, and successful partnership with your horse.

Why Start with the Respect Series?

The Respect Series is the starting point for every horse. It doesn’t matter if you’re working with a green colt or a seasoned competition horse; respect and attention are non-negotiable. Without these two elements, progress becomes nearly impossible.

Michael Gascon, a 5th-generation horse trainer with experience working in over a dozen countries and with countless breeds, emphasizes that respect and attention are universal requirements. Regardless of the horse’s background or training level, earning their respect ensures that they’re willing to listen and learn.

The Importance of Respect and Attention

When a horse doesn’t respect its trainer, it’s impossible to get its full attention. And without attention, meaningful progress in training is unattainable. Michael shares his insights:

“I see horsemen and trainers with all the knowledge in the world, but if they can’t gain the respect and attention of the horse, they’re unable to teach it anything.”

A horse must see you as the leader in the relationship. This doesn’t mean using force or fear but rather creating a bond built on trust and consistent communication. When a horse respects you, they’re more willing to focus and work with you instead of against you.

What You’ll Learn in the Respect Series

In the Respect Series, you’ll learn step-by-step methods to:

  • Gain Your Horse’s Respect: Establish leadership in a way that’s clear and fair.

  • Capture Their Attention: Ensure your horse is fully focused on you, making each training session productive.

  • Build a Solid Foundation: Lay the groundwork for advanced training by addressing respect and attention first.
