I just returned from a weeklong retreat with Horse Help and the Gascon family in Mississippi, and I’m still riding the high of what can only be described as a truly life-changing experience. I went in expecting a traditional clinic—some instruction, a bit of riding, a few new tools to take home. What I got was a five-day immersive experience that completely transformed the way I think about horsemanship.
Michael Gascon was our main instructor, and let me just say—he is truly an unexpected personality in the horse world. With all of his accomplishments and accolades, you’d expect someone polished and serious. Instead, he teaches with an incredible mix of humility, humor, and heart. He makes the learning fun, approachable, and real. No ego, no intimidation—just someone who genuinely wants you to win with your horse.
The lessons were presented in the most straightforward, easy-to-understand way No fluff, no complicated jargon—just real, effective methods that anyone can understand and apply. And while the concepts were simple, the impact was anything but. The techniques I learned are going to forever change how I communicate with and redirect my horse.
I didn’t bring my own horse this time, but that didn’t take away from the experience one bit. The Gascon horses are amazing—well-trained, professional-level show horses that can do anything you ask of them. Working with these horses gave me a chance to focus fully on learning, building my confidence, and really locking in the techniques. But make no mistake—next time, my horse is coming with me!
Another standout was the diversity of riders. We had dressage riders, trail riders, eventers, new riders, and folks who brought their “problem horses” looking for breakthroughs. It didn’t matter your background or experience—everyone was welcomed, supported, and grew in their own way.
And we played games!! But not just for fun. These were high-energy, carefully designed exercises that challenged us to communicate clearly, lead with purpose, and stay present. What seemed playful on the outside turned out to be some of the most impactful horsemanship lessons I’ve ever experienced.
The accommodations were cozy, the food was absolutely delicious (all home-cooked!), and the Gascon family? They welcome you like one of their own. I left with a new perspective, new skills, and a serious craving to go back again.
If you’re looking to grow—not just as a horseperson, but as a leader and partner to your horse—this is the place!
